2012 AHG Camping

This weekend was the much anticipated American Heritage Girls Troop CO3125 camping trip. This year we were camping at Rocky Mountain National Park. We have been to the park several times but never camped here so we were all really looking forward to the fun. Another first would be camping in our new giant tent. We had outgrown our previous 4 person tent with the addition of Kayla so this time we decided to go BIG! We can actually stand in this one and walk around. Mom and Dad even splurged and bought cots for the adults. No more sleeping on the floor. We LOVED it. We can handle this style of camping.

Our first night we had a family cookout which was cut short by some rain. No worries. We had a nice big tent to go back to. Saturday morning we organized to take a family hike together. We were blessed with a beautiful day in our National Park.

There were lots of rock formations along the way to stop and take breaks. This seemed to be our gangs favorite part of the hike. Can’t say I blame them too much.

Reagan loved the chance to just hang with her buddy Ale. They were a great hiking team.

Brandon had volunteered to set up some geocaching treasures for the kiddos to find along the trail. The kids loved the hunt. Here is part of the group looking up their next coordinates.

At the turnaround point we stopped to eat our picnic lunch. We were accompanied by this little guy. He would come right up to our food and steal pieces for himself. Quite a tricky little guy.

Post hike we had some down time. Sydney took this time to work on her fire building badge. Reagan on the other hand took the time to play video games in the tent. This kid can’t take too much outdoors time. She needs her screen time! After dinner the group all met up again to attend the evenings Ranger Talk. After the talk our troop would be given its very own swearing in ceremony for the Junior Ranger Program. This was the final badge needed by our kids for Colorado’s 4 National Parks.

Before bed we hosted a campfire and s’mores at our campsite for everyone. Campfire was once again ala Sydney. She was so proud to show off her skills. It was a fun time to just chat with everyone.

The next morning we had a family gathering for pot luck breakfast. Afterwards our final event of the trip would be Orienteering. We are lucky to have Mr Brothers who is a prolific outdoorsman on our team. He set up the course for the girls and I bought new troop compasses for everyone. Mr Brothers started out with a great tutorial on Orienteering.

The girls all got a great chance to learn how to work a compass and get your bearings on a map. Proud to say they all did great.

After the tutorial we were broken out into groups with coordinates for our three stops. I was assigned to help with Reagan’s group. Here we are out on the hunt. Reagan was a natural.

Our final stop was out on this rock formation were each girl found her own Sacajawea Dollar. Nothing like a little treasure at the end of a hunt.

Another fun Camp with AHG. Can’t wait until next year!
